The village of Sixt Fer à Cheval is situated at the topHaut-Giffre valley. The village is well deserving of its 'Grand Site de France' label (place of great natural interest).

Visitors to the village will be bowled over by the richness of the natural and cultural conservation areas to be found in these exceptional surroundings, sharply contrasting with the otherwise gentle relief of the Haut-Giffre valley.

To be found at the far east end of the valley it is an immense amphitheatre of steep limestone cliffs stretching for 4 to 5 km and reaching heights of 500 to 700 metres.
It is the largest alpine mountain cirque, dominated by the 'Corne du Chamois' and set against the serrated edges of the Tenneverge (2985m). During the month of June more than thirty waterfalls can be seen gushing down the rock faces..
